Giannis Antetokounmpo lit up the LA Clippers with 38 points and 16 rebounds as his Milwaukee Bucks beat the LA Clippers 129-124 but it was the absence of Kawhi Leonard that snatched the headlines.

The highly anticipated match up between the two NBA superstars never eventuated and it ended up being to the benefit of the man they call the Greek Freak.

Antetokounmpo became the first player in league history with 200 points, 100 rebounds and 50 assists in the first eight games of a season, although he missed a triple-double by a single assist.

Leonard sat out the match, which was a scheduled absence despite it being nationally televised, and left fans angry after not being able to see the stars clash.

“I’m not trying to be disrespectful towards anyone or hurt anyone’s feelings but I’ve played with Kawhi, I know he’s a tough competitor but I know he wants to play the game,” he said.

“I don’t know who tells him not to play or tells him to take a break.

“I think the NBA usually gives us 22 or 21 days off throughout the season. In games like this, I’m going to do try whatever it takes to help my team to win and coach Bud knows that. He would never come to me and say ‘look Giannis, you need to take a break in a game like this’. I would not allow that to happen.”But NBA analyst Doris Burke tore into Leonard and the load management issue on ESPN’s Get Up.

“It is mind-boggling that Kawhi doesn’t want to play the reigning MVP and he’d rather play against Portland on TNT,” she said. “I believe the league has a long-term problem, when it pinches them, I don’t know. But Kawhi not playing is ridiculous at this point.

“He is a great player, he is compelling to watch and the Clippers have a responsibility to Kawhi and to winning and to long-term but the league should be concerned that their best players are not playing on nights when they’re on national television.

“People tune in because they want to see the players who are so compelling. But Kawhi not playing, I’m not there tonight but I am disappointed for my colleagues and I’m disappointed for the fans. When this pinches the NBA I do not know but to me, the league has a problem.”The following statement has been issued by the NBA regarding the LA Clippers and the playing status of forward Kawhi Leonard:

“Following additional review of the LA Clippers not playing Kawhi Leonard in last night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA has confirmed that the team’s decision to sit Leonard for management of an injury was consistent with league rules. The team has reasonably determined that Leonard is suffering from an ongoing injury to the patella tendon in his left knee and has been placed by the team at this time on an injury protocol for back-to-back games.

“The NBA has fined the Clippers $50,000 for statements, including by head coach Doc Rivers, that were inconsistent with Leonard’s health status.”The Los Angeles Clippers were fined $50,000 by the N.B.A. on Thursday — punishment for a public proclamation by Coach Doc Rivers that his star forward Kawhi Leonard “feels great” after the league, based on medical information provided by the Clippers, deemed Leonard to be injured.

The league announced that the fine was issued “for statements, including by head coach Doc Rivers, that were inconsistent with Leonard’s health status.”
